This week in Core 4:
We had a great week in Core 4! Students have chosen their Ancient Civilization groups, and have chosen which aspect of those civilizations they'd like to become an expert in. Students spent this week generating questions we'd like answers to in relation to their topic, and then used key words and online resources to research and find answers to those questions! Next week students will begin creating team posters to demonstrate their understanding, and to teach what they know to the rest of the class. We also continued every day edits and mindfulness, and spend time thinking about narrative writing, and what type of narrative writing piece each student might be interested in creating to show understanding of our project.
Mesopotamia books will head to three different libraries next week! Our books will be on display at the Hermosa Beach Library (thanks for coordinating, Harriet!), the Hawthorne Library (thanks for coordinating, Dulce!), and the Wiseburn Library (thanks for coordinating, Shane!). I will send a separate e-mail letting you know where you can find your student's work :) In addition, completed book checklists went home with students today and will go home Monday as an assessment for their Mesopotamia books-students decided that at least 7 checks signified a "high quality" book!
Our classroom is running out of supplies! If you have any cleaning wipes, tape, lined paper, pens, or other general classroom supplies handy, we will gladly accept them!
Finally, I mentioned a Youtube link featuring Derreck Kayango, our inspiration for this project, and am providing it here for you to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHW5hvTFhrg
Enjoy your weekend!
This week in Core 5:
We had an interesting week in Core 5! This week was all about preparing for and executing our first in-class debate. The question was "knowing that slavery was a major cause of the Civil War, was the issue of slavery a moral issue, or an economic issue?" I encourage you to ask your student how he/she felt about this experience :) Next week, students will be assigned new research partners, and will begin gathering information for our next debate on modern day slavery and racism.
Our 1800s books are ready to head off to the Veteran's Library (thanks for coordinating, Scott!). Stay tuned for more information on this, and how we might be able to incorporate more than a book and soap to our Veterans. In addition, completed book checklists went home today and will go home Monday with students today as an assessment for their final 1800's book.
