Core 4/5 Skate Night on Fri 3/13-More info to come soon!
This week in Core 4:
We began the week by watching a TED talk by Derrek Kayongo, the founder of the Global Soap Project. The video is well worth watching if you haven't seen it already! This conversation led to defining the word "refugee", and connecting Ancient Civilizations>religious persecution>sending refugees soap as part of our project :) Students are diving in and thinking critically already! There is quite a bit of inspiration floating around Core 4 right now.
We ended the week by exploring Ancient Egypt through some interactive station rotations. My favorite station was matching different members of the Ancient Egyptian Class System to their photo depicted on a pyramid, then making connections to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs :)
If you are looking for more field trips to echo the awesome learning that took place at the Bower's Museum this week, I suggest heading up to the Getty Villa and taking a tour, where you can learn about Ancient Greece...plus, the views are STUNNING!
We have also re-introduced our mindfulness practice right after lunch, and have begun Every Day Edits-where students have an opportunity to practice their editing skills while reviewing spelling/mechanics as a warm up to our afternoon. Our afternoons have been spent exploring the idea of note taking, why we take notes, and how we know when we should be taking notes. Book club feedback is on its way home. Everyone has a completed rubric attached to their summary. Some students have a student goal planning sheet attached as well, Check in with me if you'd like to know more! We clearly had a very productive week :)
We will have guest speakers in our space on Monday and Tuesday. Please bring in an empty toilet paper/paper towel roll for one of the activities we will be doing. If you have more than one, we will take them!
Enjoy your weekend!
This week in Core 5:
We began the week by watching a TED talk by Derrek Kayongo, the founder of the Global Soap Project. The video is well worth watching if you haven't seen it already! This conversation led to defining the word "refugee", and connecting our civil war>civil wars around the world>sending refugees of war soap as part of our project :) Students are diving in and thinking critically already! There is quite a bit of inspiration floating around Core 5 right now.
We ended the week by playing a review game of Jeopardy, where the set up of the teams simulated the Union and Confederacy during the civil war. We had a great time! Ask your students about their experience :) December Book club feedback is on its way home. Everyone has a completed rubric attached to their summary. Some students have a student goal planning sheet attached as well. Check in with me if you'd like to know more! We clearly had a productive week :)
Our Core 5 field trip to the Museum of Tolerance is coming up. Please plan to attend if you can. See my e-mail and e-mails from Laura Glasser for more info. This trip will enhance several in class experiences, so it should prove to be very powerful!
Enjoy your weekend!
